I want to make this pattern (bottom left view):
Using this fabric:
My question to you is, will an entire dress made out of red polka dot fabric be...well, a bit much? If it was a swingy skirted affair I wouldn't think twice, and I am a massive fan of the bold and busy print, but the more sedate style of dress is holding me back from making the cut. Perhaps it's just the picture on the pattern sleeve that is skewing my judgement as I know both Tilly and Jane have made it in much funkier fabrics which looks fab...
What do you think? Yea or nay? How do you decide on your fabric/pattern pairings?
I probably won't get started on the project for a while, I'm totally zonked this weekend after my first week in my new job - taking in information and being 'switched on' all the time is tiring. But I am loving it so far, so big smiles even if it has meant my crafting energy has been reduced to zero recently. I'm off to a wedding in Scotland next weekend so I was hoping to stitch myself something to wear but it's completely not going to happen!

Not too much but you might strobe a bit in photos - so maybe not for the wedding...? But a big black belt would break it up/tone it down a bit.
ReplyDeleteHey Carly, I don't think it would be too much to make your dress out of the red polka dot fabric. As you point out, Jane and Tilly's versions are loud and beautiful, so I think yours will be too! Looking forward to seeing it ;o)
ReplyDeleteI reckon you should go for it! Jane's version involved a red fabric with a tiny print and hers looked fab. It sounds like you have 80% decided on it you just need a little shove from us to convince you :o)
ReplyDeleteI think a dress in that fabric would look FABULOUS. I wish I'd thought of it first! I like amongthechimneypots suggestion of a big black belt too, or a big red one. x
ReplyDeleteYep go for it! I think it will look gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI think it'll look nice, as Jane's red one looked awesome, but if it turns out to much you could think about cutting the sleeves down or adding some embellishments (buttons / collar etc) in another colour.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice all! I think I'm gonna go for it, although I agree it'll need something to break it up a bit....I'll decide what later but ideas so far include some sort of bow belt a la Tilly or a large, very plain one-colour brooch...
ReplyDeletehihi...seems like you do not need any help no longer and have decided already! :) I totally agree with the others and think it will look great with a black belt!
ReplyDeleteI actually think it's the more sedate style that warrants the busier print! If you have a flamboyant style of dress, I often think they shine more in plain colours, but for plainer cuts I quite like the use of a busier print! With a cute little belt around the middle and a cardigan over the shoulders it'll be totally Hepburn-esque!
ReplyDeleteCarly I've popped a link to your blog on my page as one of my 'picks' for the Liebster Blog Award - a little recognition for smaller blogs like ours :-)
